A smart gadget's support promise belongs on your shopping checklist alongside fit and compatibility. Start with the exact model's manufacturer page, not a retailer's broad description.
What the UK requirements cover
The UK consumer connectable product security regime took effect on 29 April 2024. GOV.UK's explanation of the regime describes three baseline requirements: passwords that are unique per product or chosen by the user, information on reporting security issues, and publication of minimum security-update periods. Manufacturer-set unique passwords must also meet rules intended to prevent easily guessed values.
This is a baseline for relevant products, not an independent assessment of every feature. The guidance lists exemptions, including a Northern Ireland qualification for products covered by relevant legislation under the Windsor Framework. Check that guidance for the applicable scope; do not assume every electronic item is covered in the same way.
Find the actual promise
Search the manufacturer's site for your full model number and “security updates”, “support period” or “statement of compliance”. Copy the wording exactly into your notes, keep its link and add the date you checked it.
Ask these questions before buying:
- Is this a fixed calendar end date, or a period measured from an event such as launch?
- Does the statement cover the exact UK model and hardware version?
- Is the remaining support period suitable for how long you intend to keep the gadget?
- Is there a clear way to report a security issue?
If you cannot find the promise, record that it has not been found. Do not turn an absent statement into a guessed number of years. Ask the seller or maker for the relevant document before deciding.
After setup
The National Cyber Security Centre recommends checking manufacturer support and keeping devices and their apps updated. Follow the setup instructions, use a strong unique password where an account requires one, and enable automatic updates if offered.
Put the support end date in your calendar. At that point, revisit the maker's advice and decide whether continued use is appropriate. An extended warranty and a security-update promise answer different questions; keep both records.
