Video doorbells: plan the view before you fit one

Check boundaries, shared paths, sound and recording before choosing where a video doorbell goes.

Before choosing a doorbell, sketch the view from the proposed position. Include the pavement, neighbouring windows, a shared hallway and any path that other people use. That is a better starting point than comparing cameras by how wide an area they can see.

Check the boundary

The ICO's home CCTV guidance says data protection rules apply when home CCTV records images or audio beyond your property boundary. Shared spaces count too. It describes obligations including limiting what is captured, informing people, keeping recordings secure, deleting them and responding appropriately to requests. The ICO marks this guidance as under review following changes to data protection law, so check its current wording before relying on it.

GOV.UK's domestic CCTV guidance also covers video-equipped doorbells. Its practical starting questions include why a camera is needed and whether audio or continuous recording is necessary. Read the full guidance for your situation; this checklist is not legal advice.

A placement checklist

Before fitting, work through the following with the device's instructions:

  1. Identify the smallest area that serves your purpose.
  2. Check whether the mounting position and camera angle can keep the view on your property.
  3. Investigate privacy masking and sound controls. Confirm what each setting actually changes before relying on it.
  4. Decide who will have account access and how you will manage saved recordings.
  5. Plan how visitors will know recording is taking place.

If the proposed location is a shared entrance, pause before buying. Permission to attach equipment and responsibilities for what it records are different questions. Ask the landlord, freeholder or relevant building manager about the proposed installation.

Check the live result

After installation, examine the actual view rather than relying on the picture on the packaging. Check it again after changing a bracket, angle or recording setting. Keep a note of the choices you made and the guidance you consulted.

If someone raises a concern, review the coverage and the ICO guidance. Avoid posting footage publicly as an automatic response. For individual rights or a dispute, use the ICO's current advice.

Before choosing a device, read our subscription checklist so you know whether the recording feature you want needs a plan. Tenancy and building rules vary across the UK; resolve local permission separately.
